Best practices successfully implemented by Kanpur Institute of Technology

  1. Title of the Practice – Beyond Curriculum InitiativesThe university has set up the traditional education for the courses where affiliated college like KIT individually may not have the freedom to moderate/design the curriculum, so the visionary management has taken up the initiatives beyond traditional curriculum both at the institute and departmental levels to enhance and upgrade the employability quotients of the students.

Objectives of the Practice –

  1. To equip students with the much-needed domain skills under Entrepreneurship Cell that enable them to become a contributing part of the corporate world.
  2. To establish among the students the belief that one coding language is a must for every technical student and it should be considered equivalent to the acquisition of a third language apart from Hindi, English or any mother tongue – for this purpose, the T&P (Training & Placement Cell) has been initiated.
  3. To equip our students with minor specializations apart from traditional curriculum that would prepare them to face new and upcoming changes in the professional world.
  4. To enable the students in the requisite Soft Skills/Transferable Skills to enhance their employability and upgrade their personality.

The Context –

The corporate world is evolving at a rapid and innovative pace, and we can already hear from the corporate experts that how industries are moving from INDUSTRY 4.0 (Digitalization, Automation & AI) to INDUSTRY 5.0, with a negligible difference between human and machine interaction to enhance the user experience – whether it is any product or service. After duly acknowledging this need by regularly getting in touch with the professionals and experts, the visionary management of our institution decided to establish two new cells in this area – the Training & Placement Cell @ KIT that plays an instrumental role in increasing the employability and skilled quotient of our students.

Primarily it was a thought for enhancement of the personality of the students, yet the main challenge was to increase the employability among the students. That is how, T&P came into existence and started to motivate the students to become active participants in the process as these cells provide some specific trainings apart from the credit courses as beyond curriculum offered by the affiliating university.

The Practice –

Since the day of orientation/induction program, the students of the institute are made aware about various versatile non credit courses which are beyond the prescribed curriculum being practiced for their individual personality and knowledge enhancement so that they might be able to make informed choices for the same.

  • After the admissions of the first year students, institute organizes some specific hours for ascertaining the students for their communication proficiency skills to train every student.
  • The Skill development Cell ensures that all the students studying in all courses are exposed to practical aspects of the Computer languages like C, C++, Python, Java, etc. to entrench it in all the students like a third language.
  • From the 2nd year onwards the choice of minor specializations is opened department wise for the students and they can opt according to their interest area.
  • Students are prescribed to gain relevant knowledge related to their course as well as specializations and MOOCs from the top institutes is combined with the learning imparted by the faculty members of the department/institute available on different platforms like Coursera, Udemy, NPTEL, etc.
  • The Soft Skills faculty members from the Humanities & Social Sciences department also play a significant role by imparting the AKTU prescribed curriculum in the first year and train the students on the self-developed modules in 2nd year as well.
  • Students of the pre-final year get trained on Soft Skills + Quantitative Aptitude + Verbal Ability to enhance the employability of our students which helps them for campus placements for which they get specialized capsule training according to the need of the specific recruiter under the supervision of SDC & PCRC.
  • The major hurdle that needed to be overcome was inspiring the students to be participative in these non-credit beyond curriculum courses by enhancing their awareness about the recruitment process and its stages adopted by the various recruiters’ hiring from our campus, and how this beyond curriculum training will benefit them. This has been mandated by making these value-added sessions as an essential component of the regular timetable and 60% mandated attendance subject-wise as per the institutional academic policy from the first year of their academic sessions.

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS –

Constantly increasing job opportunities and students’ placements from our campus acknowledge the concerted efforts of the institute.

Problems Encountered & Resources Required –

The biggest challenge of ensuring students’ participation has already been taken due care of by strictly implementing the institutional academic policy and as far as the required resources are concerned – the faculty members and Trainers involved in the Training & Placement are all in-house resources who arrange for due interaction with alumni and industry personnel as & when required. In-house aptitude and verbal ability faculty members and Trainers have also been recruited and for conducting some specialized training sessions to enhance the recruitment prospects of our students an out-sourced agency is also made available to the students periodically, whenever required.

  1. Title of the Practice – E- Governance

In the world of automation, our technical institute, KIT has adopted a well equipped service ‘ERP’ few years ago. It is nothing but an excellent application of cloud which helps to maintain an organization in a specific manner. The basic thoughts of providing this service to the institute are – Intelligent Automation, greater efficiency, and an instant insight across the organization.

Objectives of the Practice –

  1. To promote automation among employees and students from the ground level so that a trustworthy environment can be created where everyone can cross verify their respective domains.
  2. To establish a work culture with greater efficiency with negligible errors.
  3. To get an instant insight across the organization where hierarchy and transparency could be perfectly followed.
  4. To promote zero paper policy.

The Context –

Asteroid365 is online institute automation software that allows students, faculties and other staff members to collaborate and share information at work and can fulfill their respective profile. The Asteroid365 platform includes the Asteroid365 ERP websites, apps and related online services, together the ‘ServiceERP’

Visionary management members of KIT have started this automation technology as ERP. The Service is intended for use by organizations and in accordance with their instructions and is provided to the employees by our management that has authorized employees’ access to, and use of, the Service ‘ERP’ of KIT. The aim of inculcating this service in our institute is to make easy accessibility of different sections at one place. Introduction of E- learning has also included in the service which has become the trend since past years.

The Practice –

Since the first day of newly joined/ admitted employees/students are made to inform about a centered monitoring facility i.e. Enterprises Resource Planning (ERP) so that they can get the required and relevant information timely whenever and if required. An individual ERP Id is created for all the newly joined employees and newly registered students on the day of their joining.

  • Student Login – Students of the institute use this to login to ERP, where they can observe a number of features like availability of subjects, time table, assessment details, etc which will be helpful for them in their daily college life.
  • Faculty Login – Faculty/Staff of the institute use this to login to ERP, where they can observe a number of features like attendance reports, leave/ tour records, assessment related activities such as question paper uploading as well as marks relevant to the particular assessment as per their role, which will be helpful for them in fulfill their responsibility.
  • Career – Authorities use this link to integrate with the institute website to receive the public applicants for college recruitment process or any visitor can click on this link to navigate to the recruitment application form, and can apply for any specific designation currently available for recruitment.
  • Online Exam – This module allows the users (Students) to navigate to online exam portal, where they can use their ERP credentials to login to exam panel and can attend their assigned exam on the scheduled date and time.
  • Student Reports – Various students’ reports such as assessment reports, attendance reports, transportation reports, marks finalization etc. can be generated through the portal which helps us to overcome the burden of physical and manual records. All the reports are available at just one click away and the concerned person can download the reports in desired format.
  • Optional Services – Services related to transportation and hostel facilities such as registration, seat booking are done through ERP.
  • Online Payment – In order to support the government if India’s initiatives Digital India, the institute has enabled a barrier free payment method through ERP. The students deposit their tuition/ hostel/ transport fees through online mode by the link provided at their ERP dashboard.
  • E- Learning – It is one of the key features of ERP where faculties upload their E- lectures and students can access it on their portals as and when required. This unique feature helps the student to recall the subject knowledge during their preparation of end semester examinations.
  • Leave Management – The leaves are provided to employees as per the institute policy over ERP and the employees must apply their leaves with prior and proper substitution.
  • Feedback management -This allows the institute to conduct the survey/feedback process to get the opinion of students on the different services offered by the institute.
  • Grievance Management – Grievance Management System is the process which enables the organizations to manage the queries/grievances of wider audiences like who work for the organization along with the audiences for whom the organization is working for. These grievances can belong to any head/department/category where in- charge of these problem areas or departments will be responsible to resolve the queries/grievances of the applicant.

Evidence of Success –

  • Grievance Portal – The institute has initiated the Grievance section on the ERP portal where employee or student can put their grievance related to their professional scenarios while being in the institute which is directly monitored by head of the institution and the management members.
  • Feedback Evaluation – Evaluation is the ground process which justifies an individual’s growth. The institute believes in taking feedback for every process an employee or a student goes through.
  • Results compilation – The most tedious process is to generate all the internal evaluation marks and compile all the internal evaluation of the students which has become much easier through ERP than it was done manually. ERP makes the complete process easier with less error. It overcomes the maintenance of manual records of students and hustling among the students about knowing their marks individually.
  • Acquiring institutional facilities – Institute believes that time is the most valuable thing in our life and being independent is the most important lesson of the education. At the ground of acquiring institutional facilities like hostels, transport, subject choice, registration etc. Students or any employee willingly can directly register themselves in the particular facility mentioned in the portal.

Problems encountered and resources required

  • A major challenge in the documentation process was manually maintenance of all the records related to the students and employees where chances of data fabrication or data manipulation were high. Data handling related to the various processes such as registration of the students per semester, fee submission, subject allocation, time table of different classes, availing institutional facilities etc. became a tedious task. To overcome all these problems ERP provides the solutions and those are just one click away.
  • Resources required for smooth conduction of ERP are reliable source, good internet connection, techno- savvy employees and admin for handling issues.
